As part of the Race to the Top initiative, North Carolina has adopted the Common Core standards. These standards move away from the traditional Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II courses, and use more of an integrated model. We will still cover the basics of Algebra, but we will also incorporate Geometry, Statistics, and Modeling. Common Core builds on prior knowledge instead of reteaching it. Students will learn in a variety of ways: individually, small group, large group, direct instruction, investigative learning, etc. While not every student responds to every type of instruction, the different approaches help students learn 21st century skills that will help them adapt to collegiate and workplace settings.
All students must take the North Carolina READY Algebra I/Integrated Math I End-of-Course test at the end of the year. This test counts for 25% of the student's grade and contains both multiple choice and gridded response. The test has some sections that are calculator inactive.
